Resistor Calculator
Pick the colors of the four bands on a resistor to decode its resistance and tolerance. The first two bands are significant digits, the third is the multiplier and the fourth is the tolerance. The result shows the nominal value in Ω/kΩ/MΩ plus the guaranteed minimum and maximum range.

Decoded bands
- 1st Band
- Brown = 1
- 2nd Band
- Black = 0
- Significant Figures
- 10
- Multiplier
- Red = ×100
- Nominal Value
- 1 kΩ
- Tolerance
- ±5% (Gold)
- Minimum
- 950 Ω
- Maximum
- 1.05 kΩ
Reading the bands (hold the tolerance band on the right)
- 11. First digit — BrownBrown represents the digit 1
- 22. Second digit — BlackBlack represents the digit 0, giving 10
- 33. Multiplier — RedMultiply 10 × 100 = 1 kΩ
- 44. Tolerance — Gold±5% → range 950 Ω to 1.05 kΩ
Color code reference (IEC 60062)
If no tolerance band exists the resistor is ±20% (M). Five- and six-band resistors add a third significant digit; this tool decodes the standard four-band type.

Formula
R = (digit1 × 10 + digit2) × multiplier · range = R × (1 ± tolerance)
Pro tips
- • Gold or silver band = tolerance band → read bands from the other end.
- • The spacing before the tolerance band marks the right-hand side of the resistor.
