How it works
- 1FormulaNeeded = (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight
- 2SubstituteNeeded = (85 − 88 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4
- 3Simplify= (32.2) ÷ 0.4 = 80.5%
- 4InterpretYou need 80.5% (B-) on the final.
What if the goal changes?
This assumes your current grade already reflects all completed work at its proper weight. Check your syllabus for dropped-lowest-score or curve policies.

Formula
Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w = final exam weight as a fraction
- • Multiply your current grade by the weight of the already-completed work (1 − w).
- • Subtract that from your desired course grade — this is what the final must contribute.
- • Divide by the final’s weight to get the required exam score.
Pro tips
- • A needed score over 100% means the goal is out of reach — talk to your instructor about extra credit early.
- • A low current grade with a heavy final is actually an opportunity: a 50% final can rescue a struggling grade.
- • Set intermediate targets per assignment using the same weighted-average math.
