Coverage at your chosen depth (1 ton)
Tonnage assumes compacted, dry material — wet sand and gravel weigh more. Verify density with your supplier for big orders.
Order 5–10% extra: spreading losses, ground unevenness and compaction (gravel settles ~20% after compaction) eat into the pile quickly.

Formula
Volume = area × (depth ÷ 12) · Tons = Volume(ft³) × density(lb/ft³) ÷ 2000 · Bags = tons ÷ 0.025
- • Convert depth from inches to feet and multiply by area for cubic feet.
- • Divide by 27 for cubic yards; multiply by material density and ÷2000 for US tons.
- • Add a 10% buffer and divide bagged needs into 50 lb bags (or price by the ton).
Pro tips
- • A 20×20 ft driveway at 4 in deep needs ~5 tons of gravel with buffer.
- • Lay landscape fabric first — it stops gravel sinking into soil and roughly preserves your depth.
- • Pea gravel rolls underfoot; crushed stone with fines locks into a stable surface for driveways.
